Before you begin growing your own pumpkins, you need to know the right timing. While some varieties of pumpkins are difficult to grow in Florida, others can be grown without any problem. While larger pumpkins may take four months to mature, smaller ones can be harvested in 120 to 150 days. Also, planting pumpkin seeds after late April will result in smaller fruits that are susceptible to viruses and fungal diseases. So, plant your seeds in the beginning of April or after July for the best results.

To grow pumpkins in South Florida, you need to plant the seeds one to two inches deep and about two to three feet apart. It is important to soak the seeds for about four hours before planting them to hasten germination. You can also start the seeds indoors, where they will have enough nutrients for their first few days. You should fertilize the seeds every two weeks, and give them ample sunlight and water.
