Growing Life Organic

Strawberry plants need a good, well-drained soil with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5. They need at least four feet of space between rows and should be planted a couple of months before you plan to plant.

They grow very slowly and need a lot of room to spread out. For a good crop, spread plants out about 18 inches apart. Raised beds are ideal. In case of heavy soil, mounded beds will help retain moisture and promote healthy growth.

The best soil for growing strawberries is free-draining and fertile. A slightly acidic soil will be more hospitable for strawberry plants. Soil amendments should be added to increase the pH of the soil to a healthy level. Commercial growers use plastic mulch, but you can use hay, straw, or pine needles instead. The pH level of the soil should be slightly acid to neutral. If you don’t have a compost pile, you can also add sulfur or limestone to the soil. The strawberries need consistent moisture and need fertilization.

Strawberries should be planted in containers or prepared pots when the soil is warm. The plants should receive at least six to ten hours of direct sunlight a day. You can separate the runners from the mother plant after a month. Take care of your babies and keep watering them until they begin to produce. If you’re in the middle of summer, you should plant the strawberry plants in a sunny spot where they will receive plenty of sunlight.
