Growing artichokes

When to harvest your artichokes is an important question for artichoke enthusiasts. You need to take note of certain conditions, such as planting and harvesting intervals. First, the plant needs to be planted in full sun or partial shade. This plant also requires well-drained soil. It should also be mulched with organic material like aged manure. After mulching, you should add a layer of compost around the artichoke plant to prevent weeds.

When to harvest artichokes, wait until the plants have buds on the stalks. If you cut the stems in late July, they can produce a second flush of flowers the following September. The harvesting period depends on the variety. Depending on the climate, artichokes begin growing bud growth in mid-May and can be harvested as early as mid-June. While growing in your garden, you should be aware that they are prone to weeds and should be planted at least one metre apart.

Regardless of where you decide to grow your artichokes, be sure to provide them with enough water. This plant needs lots of water to produce tender buds. As a perennial plant, they need deep watering to thrive. To encourage deep watering, use Gilmour’s Thumb Control Swivel Nozzle. The summer months can be too hot for artichokes to bear fruit. Keep the temperatures cool by planting them in a raised bed or a container.

Unlike some other plants, artichokes will not produce buds in the winter. Instead, you’ll have to prune them and let them overwinter. During the winter, the leaves will become stunted, so you can pick them as late as mid-June. Once they’ve reached maturity, they will continue producing chokes for five to 10 years. After that, you’ll need to transplant the plants again.

In the spring, when artichokes stop producing buds, you should prune the plants. You should remove the entire bed and cover it with thick mulch, as they need to stay cool. During the summer, the plants will produce tender buds, so keep watering them during the summer will help them to grow. If you’ve planted the artichokes in an area with poor drainage, be sure to keep the area around them moist.

It’s possible to plant an artichoke in your garden during the spring, but you should wait until the summer months. Then, plant them in a sunny spot in your garden. If you plan to harvest your artichokes during the fall, they’ll stay dormant for the winter. You should keep the soil moist during hot weather, as they like to be kept damp and have a pH of between five and seven.
