How to grow organic artichokes

You may want to grow your own artichokes this year. They grow well from cuttings and seed, but they are extremely long-lived and require a lot of space. These plants need a full day of sunlight and a cool environment in order to flower properly. Sowing them outdoors in early spring may be easier, but you should plant them indoors once the last frost has passed.

To harvest artichokes, wait for them to fully mature. When the flowers start turning brown and dying, you should cut them off. Place the bud in a small paper bag and store it in a dark, dry place for a few days. If you are in a warm, dry location, you should wait until the second year, as artichokes rarely produce a substantial yield in the first year.

After the leaves start to turn brown and die, move them to your garden. You should plant artichoke seedlings in four-inch containers, and leave them there until they are 8 to 10 weeks old. They should be planted at least four feet apart, as they grow very big. Ensure they have plenty of room to spread out, and water them at least two inches per week.
