How to Grow Kale Indoors and in the Garden

To grow kale in Canada, you’ll need to start the seed indoors six weeks before the last frost date. The seeds germinate very quickly in warm soil and should sprout in five to eight days. You’ll need to keep the soil moist and keep the seedlings about an inch apart for the first two weeks after planting. In four to six weeks, you can transplant the seedlings to the ground.

As with any plant, kale needs a consistent supply of moisture, so be sure to water well. Plants need around one to 1.5 inches of water per week, which you can measure with a rain gauge. You can also use mulch on your kale plant to help retain moisture and prevent weeds. A good mulching technique is to add a layer of organic matter to the soil around the plants.

After exposing the plants to frost, kale is ready to harvest. In the spring, kale is ready to harvest. It will continue to grow until it gets too warm and is covered in snow. The flavor of a healthy dose of kale will be delicious and nutritious. Sow seeds as soon as the weather is warm enough. It will take about 50 days to reach maturity. But if you’d like to pick it earlier, the plant will still keep growing until frost.
