Black Magic Kale

Among the many varieties of kale, Black Magic kale has a particularly sweet taste and large leaves. It matures from grey to green to a deep forest-green color. It is highly resistant to bolting and is a good choice for home gardens. This plant can be harvested at just six inches tall, making it ideal for baby greens. It can be harvested at harvest time, either by trimming off the leaves or by harvesting the entire plant.

Compared to other brassica crops, kale is not prone to pests, but row covers are helpful. A fungus known as Bacillus thuringiensis controls loopers and cabbage worms. This kale is susceptible to black leg, which can cause damage to the leaf. Seed lots must be tested for black leg or black rot, in at least 1,000 seeds. The results of these tests do not guarantee disease-free seedlings, however.

The leaves of Black Magic kale are larger than those of its cousins, Lacinato kale. They grow to almost two feet in length, are dark green, and have a mildly sweet taste. They are ideal for salads and can be harvested at six inches, or a little less for baby greens. They also contain plenty of antioxidants, making them an excellent addition to any garden. And as they have a low water requirement, they can be grown in the sun.

A Tuscan-type kale, Black Magic has narrow, glossy, and dark green leaves. The leaves are crinkled and resemble a fern. When the plants are fully mature, they reach 61-91 inches tall and nine inches wide. This kale is perfect for preparing kale chips. Simply bake the kaiser in a pan with oil and spices and you’ll have crispy kale chips.

Its flavor is mild, but it may take up to a month to fully mature. It is a good choice for salads and is often harvested when it is six inches or less. Its excellent cold-weather tolerance makes it an excellent choice for home gardens.
