How to Grow Cucumbers in Denver

Cucumbers are grown in a variety of soils. They grow best in a well-drained, moist soil and should be planted at least three weeks before the first frost. The seeds should be sown about 1/2 inch deep in the container and spaced about 3 inches apart. When the seedlings are larger, you can thin them to a distance of 10 inches. They require full sun, but they are hardy in cool climates.

To start growing cucumbers, prepare the soil for planting. A well-drained bed is preferred. Dig it eight to 12 inches deep. Till the soil with a spading fork or a hoe. Use a row cover cloth and cover the plants when the vines begin to flower. Once the vines have begun to bloom, remove them immediately. If cucumbers are too small to harvest, you can remove them and place them in the refrigerator.

When starting your cucumber plants, make sure they receive adequate water. They need one to two inches of water a week, but need more if temperatures are high. Consistent watering can cause the fruit to become bitter and difficult to eat. If you can, use drip irrigation to keep the foliage from getting wet. Also, mulch the bed to help hold moisture and prevent diseases. If you have a soil that’s heavy and poorly drained, consider using a soaker hose.
