The soil around your sweet corn plants should be rich and loose. Soil that is too dry or too sandy will inhibit its growth. You can amend the soil with coarse sand. However, be careful not to use chemical herbicides in your home garden. You should check the soil for looseness before planting. After planting, leave the container in the sun for a few days. The pH level of the soil must be 5.5 to 7.0.

Soil Temperature. Soil temperatures should be around 60degF or 65degF. Make sure the soil is well-drained and nutrient-rich. You should plant the seeds 4 to 6 inches apart. The soil should be completely loose before you plant them. When planting the sweet corn, cover the seed with loose dirt to increase air circulation. Lastly, the soil must be neutral or slightly acidic. You can adjust the pH levels of your soil by adding a few teaspoons of compost.
